Ryan Gosling Has Your Future Haircut
Ryan Gosling is out doing press for the new Blade Runner sequel, most often alongside Harrison Ford. Both men look a little...underwhelmed by the whole process, down to their respectable but very low-key wardrobes. But even when Gosling doesn’t care to be a style legend, he can’t really help himself. While he might not look quite as swanky as he did on, say, the Nice Guys press tour, his grooming game is more on point than ever. In fact, we’d argue that it is, Blade Runner–style, from the future. Maybe more 2018 than 2049, but you get the idea.
That's because when it comes to men's haircuts, the tide is changing. Natural, ungroomed texture is starting to take the place of the super-groomed looks that have dominated for years. Similarly, something nearly unthinkable is happening: The side-parted high fade is losing its stronghold as the everyman cut of choice. Guys are also embracing more varied lengths; both buzz cuts and long hair are everywhere.
Gosling’s haircut might seem like nothing special, but it actually encapsulates the grooming mood pretty perfectly. It’s messy and undefined, and an accurate representation of what a lot of guys will look like this winter and into the spring as they grow out their buzzes. Growing out a shaved head used to be something you wanted to avoid at all costs; now it’s just as cool as the buzz cut itself.
Whether your hair is as blond, straight, and fine as Gosling’s, or black or brown and coarse or curly, this haircut is like a crystal ball into the future. A future that involves you sleeping in an extra 10 minutes because you don’t have to use three different products to get your hair to look the way you want it to. A future that involves you visiting your barber exactly half as often. There might not be murderous replicants or flying cars, but your hair's definitely going to look cool.
