How to Get Josh Brolin's Deadpool 2 Cable Haircut

If you’re one of the many young dudes sporting a high, tight fade right now, there’s a chance you might be itching for a change. For one, men’s hair has entered a wild, DGAF period that makes military cuts look a little…uptight. For another, its associations with the alt-right have gotten a little too close for some. If there were anything that could save this cut from impending obscurity (at least until our hipster grandchildren resurrect it again, of course), it would be this: Josh Brolin looking like a “'roided-out cyborg version of David Lynch” as Cable in Deadpool 2. He sports the cut in the just dropped movie posters and looks…well, he looks pretty badass.

We’re of the mind that Cable’s haircut is a little bit different than today’s typical high and tight fade for two reasons. For one, it’s gray. For another, it’s on the shorter side on top and there seems to be some Hugh Grant-era volume happening in front. We turned to Leah Shields, a barber at Blind Barber in Los Angeles, to give us her take on what’s happening here (i.e. validate our theory and give us a reason to keep loving this cut).

“This haircut is very similar to the one Brad Pitt had in the movie Fury,” she started out by saying. Shooooot. Pitt’s haircut in this movie, while incredible, is textbook military. He literally plays an Army sergeant.

“It’s an undercut, slicked back with a slight side part,” Shields went on to explain. “To achieve this look you should ask your barber to use a clipper length between skin and 1 on the sides. Let them know you’d like an undercut and that you’ll be pushing it back so that they’ll make sure to leave plenty of length on the top.” Yeah. Yeah…

Okay, shoot, it’s the same.

To style the cut, Shield’s recommends applying a bit of pomade on towel-dried hair before combing and blow-drying it back. Once that’s done you can work in some hair wax to seal off fly-aways and keep everything in place. Her advice is worth taking if you like a polished look and your hair tends to be uncooperative. Layering multiple products and using a blow-dryer are both smart, under appreciated grooming moves.

As for the fear of accidentally looking like a white nationalist when you're sporting this cut in the real world? That’s a valid concern. But give it a little bit of time and someone spotting this slick cut won't think you have regressive world views; they'll just think you're a Deadpool fan, or a serious Josh Brolin fan, or better yet, a guy with his grooming game on lock.
