If you like high-shine, slicked-back rockabilly hair—as seen on Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner in the September issue of GQ—but are hesitant to take the plunge, meet the look’s lazier brother. Created by Jorge Luis of Prive Salon in NYC (the lead stylist for yesterday’s Ernest Alexander show), this is a more modern quiff—like what James Dean might have looked like the morning after.

Here’s how to get the look.

The Inspiration: "It’s a polished young guy who is put together but has a little roughness or rock ’n’ roll to him," says Luis. "He wants to look good, and have a little fun."

The Cut: Ask the stylist to taper the back and sides of your head with clippers to about half an inch, leaving at least two and a half inches on top. "Some guys can go longer, it just depends on how much time you want to spend on your hair," says Luis.

The Style: Apply a texturizing spray to towel-dried strands (Luis used Prive Finishing Texture Spray on the models) and blow-dry the sides and back of hair to keep things "tight and groomed." If your hair is stick straight, use a blow dryer on longer locks up top while pushing them away from your forehead for height. If you have a natural wave or texture to hair, go ahead and air-dry. Last step: Rub a dime-sized amount of clay (try Prive Extended Texture Clay) through fingers and use them to mold hair into the shape you want it to be.
