With a daytime gig that involves running Brooklyn-based fragrance studio Joya and blending scents for the likes of Rodarte and Opening Ceremony, Frederick Bouchardy prioritizes two things in the morning: a clear nose and head. "I take my pup, Clay, for a walk to get some fresh air, and then I have twenty-one minutes of guided meditation." His grooming regimen is less rigid—just a few key products and a whole lot of testing out others--but that’s not to say he isn’t picky: "I can’t help but pick apart the ingredient lists on the back of grooming products. I’m obsessive, like a calorie counter or vegan. You know if something like tea tree oil comes at the tail end, it’s usually just a sprinkle so they can say it’s in there."

We spoke with the young entrepreneur while he was busy prepping for this week’s Elements Showcase, a trade-show that feels more like an art-fair cofounded by Bouchardy for design-oriented grooming and beauty brands. For a peek inside the scent-master’s grooming regimen, see below:

The Face: I don’t use cleanser. It’s a splash of cold water and then moisturizer with SPF. When I’m in Paris I go to the pharmacy and stock up on products. I like the sweet water scent of La Roche-Posay’s facial moisturizer.

The Hair: I shampoo every other day and honestly use whatever I can find. On the days when my hair is clean and kind of fluffy I’ll rub in a drop of Rodin’s hair oil with water so it’s not so voluminous. You don’t want it to look greasy but you also don’t want to look like a tiny boy. I like Shan Rahimkhan’s hair cream, too—it has a beautiful scent.

The Shave: I don’t grow that much hair so I can get away shaving once a week with my MACH3. I like shave creams from Baxter of California, Ursa Major, and even the foamy Gillette stuff. I love the smell of Casewell-Massey’s Almond Shave Cream.

The Body: In the shower I like using liquid soaps, usually Malin + Goetz’s Rum Hand + Body Wash or Juniper Ridge’s Cascade Glacier Trail Crew Soap, which has that refreshing cold pine needle scent. I also use my own Joya Composition No. 6 black vegetable soap.

The Scent: I switch up my fragrances all the time. Right now I like Io Capri by Carthusia, Black Amber by Illuminum and Amber by Laboratory Perfumes. I put fragrances directly onto my forearms and the neck area and then I’m ready to rock.
