I’ve had the worst luck with body hair trimmers. Or rather, I’ve tried many methods on my sweater-like chest hair—from beard trimmers with a high guard, to a spot-check job with a guard-less trimmer—but I can never get one even trim. Inevitably, I take an extra quarter inch from one spot, or press too hard in another spot and chop out a square inch of hair entirely. It’s so frustrating that I often skip the trimming all together. I don’t mind being hairy, anyhow, but it is nice to dial the fuzz back a half inch, especially since it becomes a sweat sponge in summer.

When it comes to body hair grooming, trimming chest hair requires something different than the back. I like to nix back hair with depilatory cream or even shave it to the skin with a beard trimmer. It’s safe to guess that, if you trim your back hair at all, you probably trim it to the skin. (Kudos to you if you let it all grow out and don’t give a f*ck.) Chest hair is a different story. While some guys want to shave it all, many of us want to keep it in some way, and usually that means trimming it every month or less, to prevent looking like a chia pet.

For an even chest hair trim, trust me on this: Panasonic’s ER-GK60-S trimmer is making this tedious task both easy and efficient for me. I get an even trim, and it only takes a minute or two.

The cordless, rechargeable wand comes with two guard attachments, for 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch trims, while the bare trimmer is able to snip hair to 0.1mm. That’s great for other body parts, like excess hair around the groin or balls (it’s especially effective for the latter, which is hard to come by), plus spot-checks on the shoulders, or even for the entire back. Before you invest in this device, though, be sure that you want hair as short as 1/4 or 1/8 inch every time you trim. Because maybe that’s too short. It’s still long enough to show, but it’s short enough so it doesn’t coil and poof out from your body.

Best of all, I’ve yet to experience any irritation, even when trimming hair all the way down to 0.1mm—and even in sensitive places like the underarms or balls (pull them taut before you trim them, fellas). The hypoallergenic blades and wide-head, V-shaped razor make for a seamless, painless trim every time.

Some other perks worth noting:

Panasonic’s body trimmer is also waterproof and totally washable, with a built-in water drain that makes it easy to flush loose clippings. An overnight 8-hour charge will keep the device running for 40 minutes. (You’ll only need to charge it every few months at that rate.)You can store it in its mobile case (and travel with it this way), or let it stand upright in the charging stand while it dries and refuels.
