Justin Bieber has always had a tumultuous relationship with hair. (See: that shaggy, almost-bowlcut thing that defined his teen icon status at the beginning.) But since he started keeping it a touch higher and tighter over the past few years, it seemed he was headed for grooming salvation.

And then the VMAs happened. At this point, very little surprises us on this red carpet (especially a naked Miley Cyrus), but Bieber's hair threw us for a loop. He rolled in with some sort of ombré undercut-gone-wrong. It was new, it was exciting, but was it good? Not exactly. Was he going for a Rachel McAdams in season 2 of True Detective vibe? Perhaps he ran out of time mid-trim and decided to just go with it. We don't know the exact motives behind the emo-swoopage, but let's just hope this is a minor grooming bump on the road to Bieber's supposed recovery. Suffice to say, if you're looking for a new haircut to try, look away (and look to this).

Though, we've gotta hand it to him. We're huge fans of the jacket. And the boots.
