Harry Shum Jr.—famous for his light-as-air dance moves as Mike Chang on Glee—has naturally great hair. It's thick and shiny and will probably never fall out or turn gray—at least not for another 50 years—#blessed. So much so that Shum's hair was a prime example of this year's best celebrity haircuts.

The actor, who is from Costa Rica, usually wears his hair styled in a subtle fade and slicks it back and to the side with pomade for red carpets and other public events. But he's unveiled a big change. Yesterday, Shum debuted a do that's a lot edgier than we're accustomed to. Don't get us wrong, we like edgy, but this exaggerated version of his previous cut with the sides shaved too close and the top too long (not to mention stiff) is a classic example of a haircut being way too much fun.

Are we being too harsh because of how much we loved his old hair? Yes probably. But the truth is this new 'do messes up the once-glorious balance of sides to top, and now it looks kinda weird. We're all for a closer shave on the sides of your fade. But you gotta stick to a balanced ratio. If you have thick coarse hair—first of all, congrats!—and second of all, you might want to ask your barber to layer it to minimize the extraneous volume. It bears mentioning that this new cut is for Shum's role as Magnus Bane on the show Shadowhunters. If you can't control the cut like Shum, the way you style that cut can make all the difference. With extra long hair on top, the last thing you want to do is drown it in hairspray and sweep it to one side, Flock of Seagulls-style. Slicking long hair back can mask its volume and length until you have time to get it trimmed and thinned at the barber. It stands to reason then, that this hair mistake could have been fixed with a simple change in comb direction and technique.
