Johnny Depp Goes Blonde, Plus 3 Commandments for Coloring Your Hair

We wouldn’t call it a fair trade, but Johnny Depp lost the goatee, tinted glasses and grunge for a suit and lemony-yellow locks the other night at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival Awards. No word yet on whether the color’s for kicks or his role in Stephen Sondheim’s film Into the Woods, but we thought we’d share a few coloring rules as a PSA regardless.
Thou Shalt Cover Gray Naturally
If gray hairs make you look less distinguished and more grandpa (not everyone is blessed with a perfect salt-and-pepper blend) ask for "gray-hair-blending" or "camouflage" at the salon, which subtracts just some of the gray and can be done in five minutes at the shampoo bowl.
Thou Shalt Never Use Permanent Dye
If you’re looking for a bold color change or trying to wipe out gray at home, stick to semi-permanent hues in ash tones (like Clairol’s Natural Instincts For Men) which look less like your aunt’s bottled color and fade gradually after three to four weeks. Dark roots should be left to the ladies.
Thou Shalt Never Get Highlights
Unless you’re a tween pop star, jarring streaks of blonde are about as douchey as wearing a t-shirt that says DTF.
