While the rest of Hollywood opted for a super clean shave last night, Jon Hamm walked in with a manly mass of bushy salt n’ pepper fur. We assumed he was either getting ready to play Paul Bunyan in a biopic or hiding a stress zit, but it turns out the Emmy nominee just can’t be bothered to pick up his razor. "I was in England and was working on a project and had been away for four months and I finally got home and I was like, I think I’m done with shaving for a little while," he told reporters.

Hamm’s stylist Diana Schmidtke says he warned her a few days before the event. "He told me, ’You have your work cut out for you Sunday’ and sent me a picture of his beard." Not that she minded: "He can do no wrong. Actors have to shave every single day, so when they’re on a hiatus, like Jon is, they don’t."

Schmidtke, who also works with Jimmy Fallon and George Clooney, says red carpet grooming prep is usually painless. "When I show up to a client’s house they know it’s time to turn off the game and get in the shower." Case in point: grooming Hamm took about ten minutes. "I trimmed away stray beard hairs and kept a nice clean line along the bottom to keep it sophisticated," says Schmidtke. Another beard essential: "I spray hairspray on a disposable mascara wand to keep hairs in place."

Creating Hamm’s natural-looking coif up top was equally uncomplicated: "I blow-dried the back first so it laid flat, then used a medium sized round brush for volume on top." Once Hamm’s hair was dry, Schmidtke warmed up Biolage Pliable Paste in her hands and, forming a claw, raked her fingers through his locks for separation. "Paste is the best. It holds all night, so I don’t have to worry about them at the after-parties."
