The Secret to David Beckham’s Excellent Hair

If you were one of countless people to search for pictures of David Beckham’s famous coif on the Internet this year, chances are you’re a guy with fine to medium-texture hair who either has an undercut or wants one. But Beckham’s look isn’t just about the cut, it’s also a product of the right styling technique. Achieving some height in the front of your hair is key, whether you slick it straight back or more to the side. Here are some ways to do that.

Stop Washing It All the Time

The dirt and oil that builds up when you don’t wash your hair will help it stay in place and look more effortless. Don't be the guy who looks like he just poured a gallon of gel on his dome.

Use the Right Combination of Products

That said, for most guys, dirt and oil isn’t going to be enough to get that Italian playboy (or in this case, British) look. A combination of styling paste or wax and dry shampoo is what we’ve seen stylists use backstage and on the red carpet. Find what works for you—just don’t rely on one product to get all the work done.

Back-Comb the Front

If your hair is still falling a little flat or you simply want to take the look to Mark Ronson territory, try back-combing it for a little extra lift. Take the underside of the front section of your hair and use a brush to push the hair towards the scalp in one fluid motion. Once you’ve achieved some height, smooth the section back to cover the back-combing.

Put Some Heat on It

A hair-dryer will also help you achieve some height in your hair. Using a round brush, lift the front section of your hair and apply some heat to underside of the section before combing back. (You could do this in tandem with back-combing or in place of it.) In addition to building height, a hair-dryer and a round brush can also help you smooth the front section back and distribute the product in your hair.
