Saying goodbye to summer is always hard, and as with any breakup, everyone deals with the loss differently. For Robert Pattinson and Zayn Malik, that meant shaving their glorious, DGAF hair down to nothing over the holiday weekend. They could have gone the #bestsummerever throwback route on social media, they could have thrown themselves into work (or working out), they could have just taken a moment (or seven seconds) to plan out their next cuts, but they apparently did not. Instead they had their epic manes sheared off like a sheep before sweater weather. If you aren’t the nostalgic type, shaving your head is a very efficient way to draw a clear line between the past and the present.

Now the mark of any good hair god is his ability to grow hair three times faster than the rest of us, so there is almost no sense in analyzing these haircuts with any seriousness. In three to five weeks, it’ll really be fall and both guys will likely step out of whatever hotel they’re staying in with a turtleneck sweater and a whole new look. But while we’re here, let’s give a moment’s pause to consider the fact that both these buzz cuts manage to be even more badass than the average guy’s version.

Robert Pattinson, who debuted his shaved head at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, also showed off an edgy flourish to his buzz cut with a white-blond patch in the front. We’re pretty sure this is the work of bleach and not a result of poliosis—a melanin deficiency that causes a person to have patches of white hair—since we've never noticed the coloring before on the Good Time star. (It's also a mysterious coincidence that Pattinson’s ex, Kristen Stewart, has the same hair color right now, too.)

Zayn Malik’s buzzed head, meanwhile, managed to have even more shock value because he didn’t just buzz it—he went straight bald. Some light Instagram stalking tells us that Malik has been slowly morphing from ordinary summer bro to pop-robot fashion warrior over the past few weeks, shaving his hair shorter and shorter until there was nothing left. We’d wonder what inspired the change if Malik weren't practically religious in his commitment to changing up his look.
