Happy opening day! Here at GQ Fitness, we love any excuse to play hooky from work, sit outside in the glorious spring weather, and slowly drink away a weekday afternoon while watching sports. In anticipation of this new season, we caught up with San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey and asked the World Series champ how he spent his off-season training for a repeat.

He's an ass man

"One of my favorite ercises is actually on the glute/hamstring machine. It is essentially leg curls using your own body weight, or you can add additional weight. It strengthens your hamstrings and glutes, which is key for any baseball player, but especially for me as a catcher. Getting in and out of a squat so many times per game, it plays a big role."

Rolling solo

"I've found that it's always best to work out solo during the offseason. I've tried the group setting for workouts in the past, but I've found that there is too much time wasted talking. I like to get in and be as efficient as possible with my workout. I don't work with a personal trainer, I just follow the plan that our strength coach sets up."

A week in the life

"A typical week consist of four to five days of heavy lifting with one or two recovery days that are centered on cardio. That usually breaks down to two days of legs, two upper-body days, and sometimes a total body workout."

Going mental

"I think it's just as crucial, if not more crucial, to be mentally fit. Baseball has such a long season, there are going to be ups and downs, so you need to stay as even-keeled as possible. I think it's really important to go in with a good mindset every day. I try to pick up a book every once in a while for a good refresher on mindset. Mind Gym by Gary Mack is one I've read several times."
