My first day back from vacation, I got four unsolicited compliments on my hair from GQ editors—which is four more compliments than I’ve received during my entire tenure here. My colleagues (both male and female) said they liked how my hair was looking a little wild and unkempt...in a good way. I was surprised. Even more surprising was the product responsible for all the love: A Natural Understated Look Cream ($4.34 at walmart.com). Natural? Understated? For A? This isn’t exactly a brand known for subtlety. But this hair cream delivers on its promise: It offers just enough hold to keep things in place without looking tamed. To apply, simply warm up a small dab of cream between your palms before working it through your damp hair. You really can’t mess this up if you go light. Added bonus: it smells fantastic—refreshing, energizing, slightly tropical—perfect when you’re trying to get started in the morning.
